Catalogue Note
In 1950, the architect Louis Osman commissioned Epstein to design a sculpture for Osman's bridge between the two Palladian convent buildings in Cavendish Square, London. The full scale version of the present work was bolted to the bridge on Ascension Day 1953 and Epstein later remarked that 'no work of mine has brought so many tributes from so many diverse quarters' (Richard Buckle, Jacob Epstein, Sculptor, Faber and Faber, London, 1963, p.358).
