Executed between January 1943 and March 1944, the present work was incuded in volume 2 of the Astor Collection, p.54. This work is incorporated with minor alterations into Spencer's 'The Temptation of St. Anthony' (1945, Private Collection, Switzerland), painted by invitation for a Hollywood film competition.
