Catalogue Note

Executed circa 1945-48.
The scene is the edge of Firle Park, East Sussex, part of the estate of the Gage family from whom Charleston, the artist's home, was rented. Grant frequently painted in or near the Park when he was living permanently at Charleston during the Second World War. This vision of the lush Downland countryside in summer belongs to a group of works that can be traced back to The Hayrick, 1940 (Coll. Tate Gallery). The painting is listed as Firle Park in an inventory of pictures at Charleston compiled by Vanessa Bell in 1950.
