Catalogue Note

Druie Bowett studied Fine Art at Harrogate School of Art where Jean-Georges Simon introduced her to a modern style of bright colours.  Bowett became an active member of the Midland Group, largely exhibiting her early works with them before her style turned towards the edge of abstraction in the 1950s, embracing full abstraction in the 1960s.  Bowett was given her first solo exhibition in London at the Drian Gallery in 1982.  Profoundly affected by the death of her husband in 1994, Bowett found her painting a cathartic process and her later expressive and painterly works reflect this emotional period.  Bowett was on the governing bodies of Chesterfield and Loughborough Colleges of Art and Design and was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
