Catalogue Note
The present work depicts Mademoiselle Pouvereau who was a parishioner of Meudon church and the subject of several watercolours by the artist. In an undated draft to Véra Oumançoff, she wrote, 'J'ai pensé que je suis peut-etre injuste pour le mérite des nouveaux tableaux du Chemin de la Croix si j'ai demandé à Mlle Pouvreau si ils sont beaux. Non elle a dit ils ne sont pas beaux, mais fines'. (quoted in Cecily Langdale, Gwen John, Yale University Press, New Haven and London, 1987, p.199).
