Catalogue Note

The anthology was compiled by Saul Shapiro over a period of almost nine years and completed in Montreal at the end of 1962. Shapiro wrote to artists from England, Canada and the U.S.A. requesting illustrations for specific poems and 'in all cases the interpretation of the poem by the artist was left completely to the latter; the only stipulation made was that the work be done in a style typical of the artist's regular work' (S.Shapiro, quoted in the Foreward to the present work). There are twenty-six drawings and paintings by a variety of artists, including Keith Vaughan, John Minton, Michael Ayrton, Ceri Richards, Leonard Rosoman, Anthony Gross, Ruskin Spear, Edward Middleditch, Robert Colquhoun and Robert Medley, each variously signed and inscribed.
To be sold together with a collection of hand written and typed letters from the artists to Saul Shapiro.
