Catalogue Note

Phyrne was famous in antiquity as the embodiment of female loveliness. According to tradition, she was the inspiration for several of the greatest works of art including the sculptor Praxitele's Aphrodite of Knidos and the Aphrodite Anadymene painted by Apelles and Jean-Leon Gerome's Phryné devant l'Areopage, painted in 1861.
