Catalogue Note
Pradier exhibited the Atalante at the Salon in 1850. The original in terracotta is kept in the Sainte-Croix Museum in the Town of Poitier, France. For this composition, the artist was inspired by the famous ancient Crouching Venus. The story is that of the Atalanta in Ovid's Metamorphoses who lost her race against Hippomena because she was delayed in gathering three golden apples. Hippomena, victore of the race , then became her husband.
