  • the plaque 10 3/16 in.; width 12 1/2 in.
  • 26 cm; 32 cm
finely painted with the nude Diana and her female companion, signed K.M. to the lower right, impressed KPM mark beneath a sceptre and the letter H, incised measurement 12-9 3/4 on the reverse.

Catalogue Note

The present work, its subject taken from Ovid's tale, is one of many highly finished and elegant mythological pictures (very often with erotic overtones) of Callisto, the favorite nymph of Diana. Here Jupiter disguised himself as Diana in order to win Callisto's trust before seducing her.
