Catalogue Note

The present lot is painted after the Cologne Cathedral's St. Mary's chapel alterpiece, painted circa 1450 by the late gothic German painter Stephan Lochner (1410-1451). It depicts the Madonna and child with the magi kneeling by their side, surrounded by a crowd of knights, noble men and women, religious leaders, the Emperor Charlemagne and people of the city of Cologne. It represents the city in homage to the infant Jesus.
