finely painted, probably after Paul Thumann, depicting the standing Clotho wearing diaphanous drapery and spinning the thread of life, flanked by her seated companions, Lachtsis as a young woman holding a sprig of bay and flowers, and the aged Atropos holding sheers in preparation to cut the thread, impressed KPM mark beneath a sceptre and the letter H and measurement 237-158 on the reverse. Set within a carved giltwood frame.
Catalogue Note
Friedrich Paul Thumann (1834-1908) was a historical, portrait and genre painter of the German School, as well as a print maker and illustrator. Thumann began his formal education in 1853 at the Berlin Art Academy. In 1863, he was invited to study with Professor Ferdinand Pauwels at the Ecole d'Art in Weimar. Paul Thumann became a full professor at the Ecole d'Art in 1866 and in 1880 was elected to become a member of the Berlin Academy. Works by the painter are in museums in Bamberg and Cologne.
