Description

  • the plaque height 11 3/4 in.; width 9 in.
  • 30 cm; 23 cm
finely painted depicting the myth of the abduction of Phoebe and Hilaeira by Castor and Polydeuces, impressed letter K and the number 319 on the reverse.  Set within a carved giltwood frame.

Catalogue Note

The original painting by Sir Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) is in the permanent collection of the Alte Pinakothek in Munich.

Here Rubens interprets the Greek myth of Castor and Polydeuces who abduct Phoebe and Hilaeira in order to marry them. Out of revenge, Idas and Lynceus, the nephews of Leucippus, kill Castor.  Polydeuces was granted immortality by Zeus, and further persuaded Zeus to share his gift with Castor.
