Catalogue Note

The original painting by Sir Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), entitled Caccia al Leone (The Lion Hunt), is in the permanent collection of the Alte Pinakothek in Munich and a painted sketch on wood made by the artist as a preliminary study is now in the permanent collection of the National Gallery in London (NG 853.1). It is believed that Rubens drew his inspiration from Leonardo da Vinci's fresco, 'The Battle of Anghiari', which was destroyed in 1557.
