Catalogue Note
Florentine sculptors active around 1900 worked closely together. Many individual artists carved and signed works indepedently and at other times worked under the auspices of one of the retail galleries, such a Bazzanti or Andreotti. The 1867 John Murray, Handbook for Travellers in Central Italy states: 'Bazzanti, on the Lungarno Corsini... keeps one of the largest warehouses in Florence for alabaster figures...'. The present accomplished alabaster group is characteristic of the work available to visitors to Florence. A similar figure, signed by the same artist was sold, Christie's, New York, october 2, lot 25, $38,240.
