parcel-gilt and brown patinated figure, on a fixed revolving spreading plinth, signed math. moreau / HORS CONCOURS, with the foundry mark E. GODEAU / PARIS.

Catalogue Note

Mathurin Moreau, son and student of Jean-Baptiste Moreau, entered the École des Beaux-Arts at the age of nineteen, exhibiting at the Salon for the first time in 1848.  He was regularly praised for his Salon contributions and obtained a number of distinctions, including a gold medal at the 1889 Exposition Universelle.
