Catalogue Note

The range of wares that the French ceramics firm of Samson (1845-1969) specialized in reproducing included copies of 18th century porcelain from such factories as Sèvres, Chelsea, Meissen, Derby and Chinese export-wares.  All wares were reproduced in a glossy, hard-paste porcelain, which helps distinguish the copies from any originals in soft-paste porcelain or Chinese porcelain.  A similar covered vase of smaller proportions was sold, Sotheby's, New York, November 22, 2005, lot 150.
