Description

  • height 11 1/2 in. (29.3cm)
of conical form with annular knopped neck, incised and glazed in red, purple and blue lustre with a frieze of figures on an unglazed cream stoneware ground, painted signature J. Barol, "La Bocca", Cannes, A. M. Minor restoration to lower body.

Catalogue Note

Jean Barol (1873-1966) trained with Clement Massier at Golfe-Juan, leaving in 1911 to form the company BACS with three other ceramicists from Massier, Marius Alexandre, Jean Carle and François Sicard. He left BACS briefly in 1917 to form the pottery of Montieres with Sicard, returning to BACS in 1920 where he remained until 1927 when he left again, this time to work as an independent ceramicist in Vallauris.
