Description

the pierced circular basket  raised on a spreading base modelled with three parian cherub supporters seated on gilt-edged volutes linked by tooled gilt laurel swags beneath pendent medallions painted with either a dog or horse, probably by Henry Mitchell, in the manner of Sir Edwin Landseer, all above a tooled foliate border on the stepped base, puce printed globe mark with T. Goode & Co. retailer's mark, impressed MINTON, year cypher and shape number 1559. Minor haircrack to edge of one cherub's cloak.

Joan Jones, Minton, The First Two Hundred Years of Design and Production, p. 65, illustrates a service, sold at Sotheby's, London, November 19, 1991, lot 277, incorporating an almost identical centerpiece, and notes that Queen Victoria commissioned similar services for use at Balmoral and Sandringham.
