Catalogue Note
Le Grand Paysan is related to Dalou's extraordinary unexecuted Monument to Labour, but was conceived as an independent figure at the end of the great sculptor's influential career.
Dalou is said to have considered that it would be through this work that he would be remembered by younger generations. For this reason, the completed plaster, which remained in his studio after 1902, was cast into bronze by Susse. Exhibited in plaster at the Salon memorial exhibition that year, a bronze was acquired by the Musée du Luxemburg (Musée d'Orsay) in 1904.
