Painted on 18th July 1835 while travelling through Switzerland on his return from Italy to Norway that year, Fearnley's dramatic presentation of the rocky snow-covered outcrops of the Wetterhorn anticipates his major composition The Grindewald Glacier of 1838 now in the collection of the Nasjonalgalleriet, Oslo (fig. 1).
