Isaac Grünewald Swedish, 1889-1946

The vase depicted in the present work was produced by one of the foremost Swedish ceramics and glass designers, Edvin Ollers. Until the 20th Century many of Sweden's factories and designers imitated foreign ideas but the pioneering experiments and new techniques developed by Ollers, Simon Gate and Edvard Hald, propelled Sweden to the forefront in cutting-edge design.

Grünewald, who was largely responsible for introducing Matisse's ideas which are so evident in the present work to his homeland, readily supported and celebrated such avant-garde designs.
