Johannes Bosboom Dutch, 1817-1891

Bosboom was highly regarded by his fellow artists of the Hague School not so much for his choice of subject, the church interiors, but because of his command of the rendering of light. Weissenbruch, Willem Maris and Anton Mauve could discuss the meaning of light in a painting or watercolour endlessly. Bosboom was able to convey the effects of light like no other in not only his church interiors, but even in the simplest of drawings or watercolour sketches. From 1855 onwards, Bosboom was a member of the Société Belge des Aquarellistes and was since its founding in 1876 also a member of the aquarellist association the Hollandsche Teeken-Maatschappij that was part of the artistic society Pulchri Studio.
