The honorary exhibition on the occasion of Weissenbruch’s seventy-fifth birthday in 1899 had not only provided him great glory but also notable returns. Especially in the United States and Canada, people had become very interested in his paintings and watercolours. All his works sold and the total proceeds were approximately a hundred thousand guilders – an astronomical sum in those days. It is possible that this extra prosperity made Weissenbruch decide to undertake for once the great journey to France to see Barbizon.

Of the painters of the Barbizon School, Weissenbruch in particular admired Corot, Daubigny and Millet. During his visit to Barbizon in the company of his student Victor Bauffe, he painted the Grande Rue of Barbizon, where many of his admired artists were domiciled.

The style of painting is exuberant for Weissenbruch – a fierce play of summer light and shade that reminds more of Corot than of his own generally reserved palette. On the left hand side, the simple house with the studio of Jean-François Millet is visible. He lived here with his wife and nine children from 1849 until his death in 1875. The Grande Rue is seen in the direction of the village, that means in the direction of Auberge Ganne where the painters used to meet. Across the street, the wall enclosing the garden of Diaz de la Peña’s house is visible. From Millet’s house, it is just a short stroll to the Forêt de Fontainebleau. Here, Weissenbruch made his second painting, the sunny Bosgezicht in de omgeving van Barbizon (Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam). In 1900, Weissenbruch provided this painting for an auction of works of art for the benefit of new accommodation of Pulchri Studio at the Lange Voorhout. The painter gave Het huis van Millet in Barbizon to the married couple Slagmulder (see dedication at the bottom left) with whom he regularly stayed at their villa Pieve Tesino.
