Catalogue Note
One of Akkeringa’s specialisations was the depiction of sunny, summery scenes in and around The Hague like, for instance, a mother with her children in the dunes, a well-shadowed garden with lodgers, net-menders and fisherman’s carts on the beach. Akkeringa places the figures in a lively play of light and shadow and manages to characterise them with a quick brushstroke. Here, Akkeringa chose for a town scene: the small park across Paleis Noordeinde with a polygonal wooden bench in the shade of a large chestnut. In The Hague, this bench was a well-known place where stamp collectors would meet on Saturdays to trade and buy.
