Catalogue Note

The present lot was executed in 1843, at the height of Bosboom's career. In that year he submitted the painting to an exhibition of the Amsterdam art society Arti et Amictiae, where it received much critical acclaim.  The art critic of the Kunstkronijk (1843/44) characterised the painting quite rightly as 'a new product of his superb talent, confirming the fame of this artist'. The jury and visitors of the Arti exhibition praised Bosboom's delicate, subtle way of painting, focussing our attention on the inner architecture and it's fascinating perspective and striking clair obscur. The approval the artist met for works like the present lot made him decide to choose the church genre as his speciality.
