Catalogue Note
At the end of 1917 Cornelis Vreedenburgh moved to Laren, not only because he was drawn to the beautiful surroundings but also because he wanted to live close to Amsterdam. He was fascinated by the city with its picturesque canals, the busy harbour and its historical centre. From 1930 onwards he concentrated on painting town views, with Amsterdam as his favourite topic.
The perspective of the old canals, with its moored boats and beautifully gabled mansions proved very inspiring for him. In ever changing compositions he painted this subject in all seasons and in ever-changing weather conditions. The current lot, dated 1936, is a beautiful atmospheric impression of the Prinsengracht on a cold autumn day, in which the chill of the mist can almost be felt. The love for his subject is imminent in this work: in the heart of the bustling city he has clearly captured a moment of serenity.
