Catalogue Note

Cornelis Springer was the son of the Amsterdam building contractor Willem Springer. His eldest brother Hendrik taught him the skills of architectural drawing and perspective, from which he benefited his entire career. While Springer painted fantasised town views in the early part of his career, he soon realised that recognisable town views were much more in demand. From that moment on he travelled throughout the country, creating studies which turned into finished paintings in his Amsterdam studio. In most cases Springer focussed his attention on a central, picturesque part of the town, which he depicted with a fine eye for historical detail. The richly decorated facades of gabled houses in the old Dutch towns furnished him with an ideal opportunity to display his painterly skills. Springer populated his views with many figures, which adds to the liveliness of his paintings. The present lot, showing a view of the ‘Zakkendragershuisje’ in Franeker, is a very good example of this. In the masterful depiction of architectural detail, the lively staffage and the rich variety of sunlit and shaded areas one recognises a painter of great talent.

A handwritten label with the artist's seals on the reverse reads: I undersigned declare by this, that this picture representing a view in the town of Franeker (Province of Friesland Netherlands) is painted by me. Amsterdam the 1st of Dec 72. C. Springer. The fact that Springer wrote this in English alludes to the international character of his clientele.
