Catalogue Note
The present work is an almost identical version of the celebrated After the Storm completed in 1858 (and now in the Collection of the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam). Our version was probably painted in the early 1860s and later was owned by the well-known collector, the London banker, Albert Levy. In addition to the present work a second version by the artist is known to exist. Commissioned by A.C. Wertheim, the so-called "Wertheim-version," was completed in 1876 (and sold: Sotheby's, Amsterdam, April 15, 2003, lot 247, illustrated).
