In the present work Willems quotes from Dutch masters with his own style of precise brushwork and fine detail. His portrayal of elegant women influenced the work of Alfred Stevens. So esteemed as Willems that the Belgian commissioned François Flameng (see lot 1) to paint his portrait now hanging in the Lieje museum.
