Indefatigable chronicler of Second Empire Parisian society, Constantin Guys was, like Daumier, both an artist and a journalist. His vibrant imagery embraced every aspect of contemporary life, but it was above all his images of women – all classes of society, from great ladies to prostitutes – that won him Baudelaire’s well-justified epithet “the Painter of Modern Life.”
