Catalogue Note

Bakalowicz painted many anecdotal episodes taken from 16th Century French history and the reign of King Henry III. He exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1873, with his "Une distraction de Henry III", no 49, and in 1882 "Henry III et ses bouffons", no 99, possibly the present work.
