Samuel P. Avery was one of the most influential art dealers in New York at the end of the Nineteenth century. Avery travelled throughout Europe, purchasing contemporary Academic paintings for his clients, the most well-known being William T. Walters, founder of the Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore.
