Catalogue Note
According to Jean Jacques Fernier the present work is an example of a subject Courbet often painted between 1865 and 1872 and again in 1876. Given the present work's similiarity to Courbet's Roches Noires de Trouville, (Fernier, no. 511) Mr. Fernier dates this work toward the end of autumn 1865. This composition is particularly notable for its Impressionist spirit, capturing the moment in which the setting sun meets the sea at the horizon.
