Catalogue Note

Beginning in 1900, Rochegrosse and his young wife, Marie Leblond, spent winters in El-Biar, a little village overlooking the bay of Algiers. The beautiful garden was full of vibrantly colored flowers: roses, peonies, jasmine, wisteria, and others. During his long stays at El-Biar, Rochegrosse and his wife would regularly invite friends from Paris and Algiers to enjoy their wonderful home. The dark haired young woman seated at left is most probably Marie Rochegrosse, whom her husband frequently used as a model.  The present work was probably painted circa 1910.
