Catalogue Note
A pupil of Jules Coutan, Bitter exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from 1910 until the outbreak of the Second World War, winning a gold medal in 1924. His humorous and stylized twist on the animalier genre successfully assimilated Art Deco style into a more traditional sculpture context. He also modelled book ends in the forms of a pair of antelopes and a pair of polar bears.
