Catalogue Note
Eugène Marioton was a pupil of Augustin Alexandre Dumont. He had a long and successful career as a sculptor and medal engraver, exhibiting regularly at the Salon from 1882 until 1922. Le Fascinator or Charmeur de serpents is one of his best-known works. The composition is at once taut and sinuous as the charmer controls the snake dangerously entwined around his arm. The subject fits within the contemporary fascination with oriental themes.
