Catalogue Note
The Farewell Kiss is typical of the classicising subject matter chosen by many late 19th century German sculptors, who depicted male warriors and female amazons on horseback, usually naked, with unceasing regularity. Schmidt-Kestner's model was unsurprisingly the most popular and was edited by the premier Berlin foundry of Gladenbeck.
