While the allegorical meaning of this extraordinary bust remains elusive, its asymetrical setting on a fragmentary column base encourages the viewer to look around the bust. In the detailing of the lace collar and especially the nest with birds feeding their chicks, Astorri displays his playful conceit while at the same time demonstrating his technical mastery in carving marble.
