Catalogue Note
Borglum was born at Bear Lake in Idaho. After a nomadic childhood across the American West his family moved to Los Angeles where Borglum became an apprentice to a lithographer. He then trained as a painter in San Franciso before going to Paris to study sculpture under Antonin Mercié at the Académie Julian. Disapointed by the formality of French academic training, he instead took his inspiration from Auguste Rodin.
Before returning to the United States in 1893 Borglum spent a year travelling in Spain, where he probably found the motif for the present model. The model was exhibited at the Salon National des Beaux-Arts in 1897, no. 8.
