  • bronze, dark brown patina

Catalogue Note

Schaper's bust of Bismarck depicts the great soldier-statesman in civilian clothes rather than uniform. Earlier in the 1870's, Schaper had depicted him in uniform for a life-size statue erected in Cologne.  A bronze reduction of the monument survives in the Deutsches Historisches Museum (inv. PI 95/11). Fritz Klimsch was one of Schaper's pupils.
