Italian, circa 1900 after the antique

The present model is a copy after the Venus d’Arles in the Louvre Museum. This ancient statue was discovered in three pieces in 1651in the Roman theatre of Arles, France. It was brought to Paris where Louis XIV had his sculptor, François Girardon, create arms for it to replace those that were missing.

Venus is holding the golden apple awarded to her by Paris in her left hand, in her right she carries the handle of a missing mirror.
