Achtermann grew up in a farming family near Munster and it was not until he was 28 that he moved to Berlin to pursue an artistic career. His first sculptures were noted by Rauch who began to take an interest in Achtermann's work. Deeply pious, Achtermann dedicated himself to Christian subjects. He travelled to Rome in 1840 where his art flourished, inspired by the religious environment. Amongst his most important works is a descent from the cross in Munster Cathedral.
