Catalogue Note
The present view appears to have been taken from the head of Lake Coniston, or perhaps one of the commercial piers which were then operating around the lake.
Arthur Severn met Ruskin in Rome in 1841 and later married his distant cousin and ward, Joan Agnew. From 1873 onwards the couple spent increasing periods of time at Brantwood where Joan cared for her ailing uncle. On his death, Joan inherited Brantwood and she and her husband stayed there for the rest of their lives.
The last sentence of the inscription on the original label attached to the backboard could refer to the fact that the painting previously hung in Ruskin's bedroom at Brantwood.
