Description
- William Turner of Oxford
- Sunset over Dartmoor
- watercolour and bodycolour over pencil
Catalogue Note
The present watercolour compares closely to Turner's Roman Road near Dorchester of circa 1845-50 which is on a similar sized sheet of paper to the present work (see Timothy Wilcox & Christopher Titterington, William Turner of Oxford, 1984, p.68, no.71). Both works are painted in gouache and have a low horizon and dramatic sunset. The present watercolour can also be compared in style to Turner's Two girls resting near a corn stook in Edinburgh (op.cit., no.57)
