Catalogue Note

Muller and Johnson left the Xanthus Valley on the 28th January 1844 and travelled to Makri (previously called Telmessus, now known as Fethiye) where they spent several weeks.  Muller remarked that 'this for scenery surpasses many other spots I have visited, its only objection being that the features are rather similar to other places.' (letter from W.J.Muller to J.C.Gooden, 30th April 1844; quoted by Francis Greenacre & Sheena Stoddard, W.J.Muller 1812-1845, 1991, p.160).   Whilst he was there Muller drew the ruins of the theatre at Telmessus and also made several watercolours of the Water Tomb which he later used to paint an oil
