Lear first visited the Lake District during the Summer of 1836 and, during his ten week stay, he wrote to his friend, John Gould...'it is impossible to tell you how, and how enormously I have enjoyed the whole Autumn. The counties of Cumberland and Westmoreland are superb indeed and tho the weather has been miserable, yet I have contrived to walk pretty well over the whole ground, and to sketch a good deal besides...'
