Catalogue Note
Wyld started his career as Secretary to the British Consul in Calais, where he took lessons from Francia. As a young man, he befriended Bonington and travelled extensively with the artist Horace Vernet in Italy, Spain and North Africa. He was based in Paris, but exhibited in London from 1849
