The present watercolour was most likely worked up from sketches Wyld made during his trip to Italy in 1834.  The year before he had travelled to Algeria where he spent six months sketching and drawing.  By chance he met his friend, Horace Vernet, there whom he knew from Paris.  Vernet was then Director of the French Academy in Rome and invited Wyld to go back to Italy with him.

A watercolour by Wyld entitled A View in Venice was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1854, no.1301
