Catalogue Note

The present drawing can be compared with a large group of landscape studies by Hoppner in the British Museum (1875-7-10-863/70), most similarly executed in black and white chalks on coloured paper.  The subjects, like the present work, are mostly woodland scenes and the rapid execution, loose outlining of foliage and subtle highlighting in white chalk is also characteristic of the present drawing
