Catalogue Note
It has been suggested that the frigate in this watercolour is that on which the artist sailed - his official task being to make drawings of such views as would be of value in identifying landfalls after he was appointed marine draughtsman to the Admiralty. His drawings were subsequently engraved and issued to naval vessels, where they were a useful addition to official charts
